Marina District History
If you’re a history buff, the Marina District is the perfect place to live. Dating back to the Spanish expeditions in 1769 and 1782, lots of seamen and soldiers were buried after dying of scurvy. The San Diego harbor near Seaport Village was first named La Puna de Los Muertos or Dead Man’s Point on the first maps of the San Diego area. Seaport Village was made into a rail yard where products were moved from ships to trains. It wasn’t until 1980 that the Seaport Village we know today was created.
The Marina District is also home to the Maritime Museum and the USS Midway Museum. You can take a look at the Star of India, the world’s oldest ship that is still actively sailing. In addition, you can tour an old B-39 Soviet Submarine. Another historic spot in the Marina district is the Broadway Pier that was built in 1913. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that the Marina District really began development. Today, the Marina District is home to hotels, shopping, museums, restaurants new luxury high rise condos and more.

Shopping in Marina San Diego
Although there isn’t much shopping in Marina San Diego, there is plenty of nearby shopping like Horton Plaza, boutique shops in Little Italy and in East Village. In Marina, you can choose from lots of different shops within Seaport Village. Although these are mainly touristy shops, you can still find a lot of cool hidden gems you otherwise might not have found.
Things to Do in Marina San Diego
The San Diego Marina District is bustling with things to do. Throughout the year, you can find plenty of events to attend at the San Diego Convention Center like Comic-Con International. In addition, you can find your share of beer fests and wine fests on both the South Embarcadero and the Embarcadero Marina Park. One of the top things to do is to take a cruise out on a Hornblower ship. You can find special events, bay tours and even whale watching excursions. You can also catch a ferry on over to Coronado island.
If you prefer to stay on land, you can run, walk, bike or rollerblade down the embarcadero sidewalk along the San Diego Bay or have a picnic in Ruocco Park in the grassy area. The Marina District is centrally located to all fun in San Diego so you never have to travel far for a new adventure.
